Dear Ocean Shore Families,

Hello!  This was a fun week with lots of festivities underway.  From our POD day, “Paint Night” fundraiser, PSD facilities planning meeting to preparations for the Winter Bazaar next week, December is a busy and productive month.

Our staff lounge has been transformed with anticipation of the Winter Bazaar on Thursday next week.  I look forward to seeing you there! Take a look at the details below (a beautiful poster created by our own 2nd grade teacher, Juli!).

Reflections From My Office:
As a classroom teacher, I always enjoyed this time of year for the festive celebrations and ways the focus on giving.  I especially liked talking with students about what are the “best gifts.”  This often led to a discussion about how the best gift aren’t always things…they can be words.  My students and I would swap “word gifts” with each other.  We shared how they didn’t cost much money, never ran out or went away, and were very easy to wrap!  I enjoyed talking about this with our students during lunch this week.  At the lunch tables, this provided a great discussion topic:  “Word Gifts.”  Here were some responses from students when I asked them for examples of “Word Gifts.”

My question:  What is a word gift you would give to someone?
Student responses:

·      “I would tell my mom that I love her.  More than anything!”
·      “I’ll give a word gift to my best friend.  I will tell her I would do anything for her.”
·      “My friend will always stand up for me.  I will tell her that.”
·      “My mom and dad tell me I’m smart.  That always stays with me.”
·      “My dad believes in me.  He tells me that when he drops me off to school in the morning.”
·      “My grandma told me I’m beautiful.”

I encourage you to engage in this conversation with your family!  Share with me your responses!

Staff Makin’ Waves:
We are fortunate to welcome Mika Duff to our faculty this year.  As our school psychologist, Mika has jumped into our Ocean Shore family with a splash!  She is a wealth of knowledge, works diligently with teachers and parents to support each student need.  We are grateful to have her at Ocean Shore this year!

From the Front Office:

The Winter Bazaar is Coming and We Could Use Your Help!

The staff is looking for a few parent volunteers to help on the day of the Winter Bazaar (Thursday, December 13th!).  Please visit the poster on the bulletin board in the main hallway to sign up if you can help us out!

Important Information for Families Registering a Sibling Into Ocean Shore Next year!  YOU MUST ENROLL YOUR YOUNGER SIBLINGS with the Kindergarten Sibling / Priority Enrollment card! These cards should be turned in as soon as possible, and can be turned into Patricia. These are in the Pacifica School District Kindergarten Enrollment 2019-2020 packet.  Please stop by the front office if you need a copy.  If you have a child who will be 5 years of age on or before September 1, 2019, your child is eligible to attend kindergarten in the fall 2019.  If your child will turn 5 between September 2 and December 2, 2019, please request the Transitional Kindergarten Enrollment Card.

From Our Library:
Book Fair was a success!

We'd like to thank you all for helping to make our Book Fair a success yet again.  Despite the smoke lowering the amount of sales, we did well thanks to your support!  Thank you to the families that purchased books for the library for all to share and a big "Thank You" to the Darah and Milo Katz family for their most generous donations of many books to our library and to multiple classrooms!  Lastly, Thanks to our volunteers for helping us set up, run and breakdown the fair - we couldn't do it without you!

Mystery Donation!

We recently received a donation of 35 books from our Amazon Wish List!  Wow!  Unfortunately, there was no paperwork in any of the boxes so our benefactor(s) remains a mystery...   Thank you mystery donor!  Thank you, thank you!  We would love to know your identity so we could thank you personally.

As always, we truly appreciate your help in fostering a love of reading and learning in our students.

Barbara and Renee

School Safety Update:
From Safe Routes to School:  Please Lend Your Voice!  Safe Routes to School brings us Y-Bikes and Lower Your Carbon Footprint Days. In the past, the district has received some support for infrastructure as well. Two years ago, Pacifica had such a good response rate that we got some extra funding!

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your feedback allows us to adjust Safe Routes to School (SRTS) education and encouragement program features to best meet the needs of each individual school.  Your feedback will also be shared with decision makers throughout the county who can address infrastructure issues regarding safe walking and biking.  This survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.
